MILWAUKEE PLATE GLASS COMPANY
Journeyman Glazier
Nov 1997 - Jul 2010
When people ask what a "glazier" is, I immediately retort that I went to the doughnut shop early in the morning... And then I let out a little giggle. The kind of glazing I did had nothing to do with pastry, but rather with windows and architectural metal. I suppose you could say that I was a bit of a trailblazer when I entered the field of glazing. I was the first female to have joined the Milwaukee Glaziers Union 1204 and complete an apprenticeship. It was a fascinating job that allowed me to be outdoors, work with my hands, and work "in the air". "The higher the better" was my motto. I never complained about the view when I was working several hundred feet up on a swing stage. Although I never held a foreman position in my years as a glazier, I still learned a great deal about leadership and teamwork. And I had one of the steadiest hands in the business with a caulk gun.
